I want to show you how to install and use DBeaver to connect to your remote MySQL. I have two SQL Server databases. One is client (Windows application) and the second is on the server. I want to sync these two databases every so often (e.g. Every 2 minutes!). I have read about different ways of syncing like replication, time stamp, log tables using triggers, Microsoft Sync Framework and so on. DBeaver is a free and open source database management tool distributed under General Public License (GPL). It is designed for developers and database administrators. DBeaver supports databases that are compatible with Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase.

DBeaver Overview

DBeaver is a free, open source multiplatform database management tool and SQL client for developers and database administrators. DBeaver can be used to access any database or cloud application that has an ODBC or JDBC driver, such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQl, Salesforce, or MailChimp. Devart DBeaver provides you with the most important features you'd need when working with a database in a GUI tool, such as:

The tool comes in two editions — Community and Enterprise. Enterprise Edition supports NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB or Cassandra, persistent query manager database, SSH tunneling, vector graphics (SVG) and a few other enterprise-level features. Note though that you can access a MongoDB database from DBeaver Community Edition using the respective Devart ODBC driver. For the purposes of this guide, we'll use the Community Edition of DBeaver to retrieve data from SQLite via the Open Database Connectivity driver.

Creating an ODBC Data Source to Use SQLite Data in DBeaver

1. Click the Start menu and select Control Panel.
2. Select Administrative Tools, then click ODBC Data Sources.
3. Click on the System DSN tab if you want to set up a DSN name for all users of the system or select User DSN to configure DSN only for your account.
4. Click the Add button and double-click Devart ODBC Driver for SQLite in the list.
5. Give a name to your data source and set up the connection parameters.
6. Click the Test Connection button to verify that you have properly configured the DSN.

When using ODBC driver for SQLite with DBeaver, SQL_WVARCHAR data types may be displayed incorrectly in DBeaver. To prevent this, you need to set the string data types to Ansi either in the Advanced Settings tab of the driver configuration dialog or directly in the connection string (String Types=Ansi) — all string types will be returned as SQL_CHAR, SQL_VARCHAR and SQL_LONGVARCHAR.

Connecting to SQLite Data from DBeaver via ODBC Driver for SQLite

Follow the steps below to establish a connection to SQLite in DBeaver.

1. In the Database menu, select New Database Connection.
2. In the Connect to database wizard, select ODBC and click Next.
3. Enter the previously configured DSN in the Database/Schema field.
4. Click Test Connection. If everything goes well, you'll see the Success message.

Viewing SQLite Database Objects and Querying Data

You can expand out the database structure in DBeaver's Database Navigator to visualize all the tables in SQLite database. To view and edit the data in a table, you need to right-click on the target table name and select View data.The content of the table will be displayed in the main workspace.

If you want to write a custom SQL query that will include only the necessary columns from the table, you can select New SQL Editor in the SQL Editor main menu. Create your query and run it by clicking Execute SQL Statement The escapists 2 - wicked ward. to view the results in the same window.

Tested and verified for MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Install:

Windows installer – run installer executable. It will automatically upgrade version (if needed).
MacOS DMG – just run it and drag-n-drop DBeaver into Applications.
Debian package – run sudo dpkg -i dbeaver-<version>.deb. Then execute “dbeaver &”.
RPM package – run sudo rpm -ivh dbeaver-<version>.rpm. Then execute “dbeaver &”. Note: to upgrade use “-Uvh” parameter.
ZIP archive – extract archive and run “dbeaver” executable. Do not extract archive over previous version (remove previous version before install).

Upgrade – don’t be afraid to remove previous DBeaver version – your settings won’t be lost. All settings are kept in the separate folder (DBeaverData in user home)

Java notes:
DBeaver requires Java 11 or higher. Since version 7.3.1 all distributions include OpenJDK 11 bundle.
If you want to use you own locally installed Java you may delete folder “jre” in the DBeaver installation folder.

You can use PPA repository to easily install/upgrade DBeaver on Debian Linuxes. Mostly it is the same as regular Debian repo but it is hosted on Launchpad.

Early Access:

You may get latest build (EA version) of DBeaver. Usually it contains all major bug fixes found in current stable version. Just choose the archive corresponding to your OS and hardware from the following folder: EA version downloads.
